I grew up with Newfoundlands so am a second generation Newf lover. My father was very involved in obedience, water training, carting, conformation and therapy work. His particular passion was water rescue training, and I would go with him to be a ‘pretend’ drowner and steward
That’s where I developed my passion not only for the breed, but also the working aspect. I am active in many aspects of this breed, with my particular favorite being the water rescue work.
We got our first Newfoundland, Gwen, in 1995 and brought her to DKC for puppy classes, and many more after. I became a member after starting classes with her.
A goal I’ve had since getting my first girl has been to attain the Newfoundland Club of America’s (NCA) Versatile Newf (VN) title. To reach this title, you must get 5 specific titles on your Newf: CH, CD, Draft Dog (DD), and junior and senior Water Dog/Water Rescue Dog.
I had gotten many titles on our first 3 girls, but Bella is our first to achieve this specific distinction. It is something I am very proud of. It took 19 years to get here, but I learned a lot in the process. I learned that while the title is wonderful, it is the journey and not the destination that I cherish most. All the training and time I spent with our first girls is truly where I learned to be a team with my Newfs and they very much share in this ultimate title that Bella received.
DKC has been very important in the journey I continue with my girls. Members/friends are so supportive, and we have wonderful instructors and different class offerings. I am able to get different viewpoints and I also appreciate that my goals are respected.
