Club Member Biography

Amy Gardner Dean & Neil Dean

Raised in Missouri and Michigan, Amy s first breeding program” started as a middle schooler with Guinea Pigs. She later learned two of her Great-Grandfathers were breeders of English Springer Spaniels and Pugs. After teaching for decades and as the corporate artist/educator for an international art supply company,  Amy returned to work out of her home studio in Youngsville with a focus on animal art.

Neil was born and raised in Raleigh and grew up with a Dachshund. He currently is in charge of the Roadway Department at Three Oaks Engineering.

Amy and Neil got their first AKC Great Dane in 1995 after getting engaged, but didn t get into the fancy until 2003. With limited breeding and showing, they became AKC Breeders of Merit under the kennel name Dogma. They began showing Pointers in 2019 and Bulldogs in 2021. To date they have owned or bred over 18 Champions (many owner handled) in three breeds.

Amy has judged Sweeps at numerous breed Specialties and is completing her final requirements to apply for her AKC Judging license. Amy is a member of the Great Dane Club of America, the Bulldog Club of America, and Piedmont NC Bulldog Club.

Together, Amy and Neil are members of The American Pointer Club and Durham Kennel Club. Amy has been on DKC s Board of Directors and is the Conformation Group Leader. Both Amy and Neil s favorite parts of showing are the friends they have made. Amy s favorite show memory to date (even over a group placement with one of her Danes) is a BISS win with a friend s Boston Terrier bitch (and finishing the litter sister s Championship at the same show, covered by Neil in BOW) when the friends couldn t make their ring time. That s what showing should be all about- enjoying friendships and enjoying exhibiting quality dogs.
