My family had dogs before they had me, so dogs were part of my growing up. In general, we had "mutts," whatever wandered up to the house and stayed. The first dog that was my personal dog was an English springer. I had wanted a cocker, but since that was at the height of their popularity, my father was afraid of getting poor temperament. So he got me a springer instead, who was a great dog.

I never lost my desire for a cocker though and when my last rescue dog died (a beagle mix), my husband got me my first cocker for my fortieth birthday.  I have had cockers ever since. My first male cocker was a bit headstrong, so I decided that some obedience training would be a good idea and I was soon hooked. Now I continue to train and show in Conformation, Obedience, Rally, Tracking and Agility. In addition to AKC, I sometimes participate in UKC, USDAA and NADAC events. By the time that headstrong boy of mine died, he had earned over 40 titles in multiple activities and venues.

I currently have two ASCOB (Any Solid Color Other than Black) cocker boys. The older, Legolas, is the first dog I finished, owner-handled all the way. He was half-way to his grand championship when I retired him. Finishing him was certainly one of my proudest moments, but I love each new accomplishment with my boys. The latest one was when my younger boy, Gilly, passed his Tracking Dog Urban test in November.

I moved to Durham in 2016, after many years in north Alabama. There I had been involved with as many as five different dog clubs, serving in various officer and board positions. Among other things, I have served as Show Chair, Trial Secretary for Obedience and Agility, and Test Secretary for Tracking. Now I am happy I can do so much with my dogs by belonging to just a single club. I love that DKC offers so many possibilities to its members.
