I believe that I inherited my love of dogs from my Dad. When I was a baby, the neighbors had a dog chained up in the backyard. Mom said that Dad would sneak over there in the middle of the night and put blankets in her dog house. My Mom wrote in my baby book that one of my first words was "doggie".
I have had Pomeranians and a Cocker Spaniel, but now I have Weimaraners. When I met my husband Joe in 1991, he had a Backyard-bred Weim named Hazel. I had never seen one before, and grew to love the sleek, short-coated breed. Hazel was the smartest girl ever! She only lived until she was 8, but she is the one that got me started loving the hard-headed, intelligent, German breed. After Hazel died, I got Tracking Dog and Novice Retrieving Dog titles on Heidi. Since Hazel and Heidi, we have had Maya, Jada, Lina, Charley, and now have a puppy named Mira.
Weims are hunting dogs. There is something about seeing your dog on point that I never get tired of! I love having a Versatile Dog, one that is capable of doing several sports well, instead of just one. I do believe that training and competing with your dog really strengthens the bond that you have.
I have competed in Conformation, Hunt Tests, Agility Trials, Field Trials, Obedience, Rally, Tracking, Barn Hunt, Scent Work and Nose Work, and Weimaraner Retrieving Tests with my dogs. My favorite venues are Pointing Dog Hunt Tests and Scentwork.
My two current dogs are getting up there in age at 11 and 13, so after not having a performance dog for a year or so, I have a new puppy. It's been a lot of fun to teach her new things. I think that she will be a really good working dog. She is smart, has a good work ethic, and seems to enjoy doing all kind of things with me.
