Mira Jones

My career with dogs has been, for the most part, in behavior counseling, serving the pet owning public. I’ve worked with dogs of many breeds and temperaments, taught group classes, written training curriculum, implemented protocols for stress reduction in dogs, and created enrichment programs.

I’ve also mentored instructors, developed a course for new trainers for a Technical College, taken graduate level courses in Applied Behavior Analysis, appeared on TV spots with adoptable dogs giving training advice, and lectured on animal behavior. It has been my greatest joy to help dogs fit a little better into this ever-changing human world. I am a founding member of the IAABC, and, prior to retirement, a professional member of APDT and the CCPDT.

Ten years ago I founded TailLights Dogs, a unique training, boarding and daycare facility. At about the same time, I was one of the first trainers in the East to pioneer the new sport of Scent Work, hosting the first trial in the Carolinas in 2012.

I joined Durham Kennel Club in 2017 to explore new opportunities and gain insight into the AKC performance world. Through DKC I have been able to learn about and experience a little bit of Conformation, Obedience, and Agility, and help with Scent Work activities. I have met many kind, supportive people through the Club and I appreciate the efforts of members, past and present, who aspire to continued progress.

Much of what I have learned has come directly from dogs themselves through their behavior and through their hearts. Gratitude goes to the dogs with me now, Indie, Boo and Riker. And, to my teachers in spirit, Smokey, Toby, Tippy, Freckles, Lemon, Tigger, Reggie, Molly, Callie, Karla, Max, Raffi, Sherman, Ike, Trinity and Anna Banana.
